It sounds fun, but here is the harsh reality I discovered after using it for a few days.
The “Celebrity” voices are just a gimmick. They are essentially filters laid over the standard Text-to-Speech engine. They capture the tone of the celebrity, but they keep the robotic cadence of an old-school AI.
Speechify Review: The Quality Test & Premium Voice
To give Speechify a fair chance, I tested their Flagship Premium Voice (which is supposed to be the clearest and most natural).

My Verdict: Can you hear that choppy rhythm? It sounds like a GPS navigation system from 2018. Now imagine listening to a 300-page book with this voice. It’s exhausting. It lacks the “breath,” pauses, and natural flow that modern AI should have. If the main voice sounds this robotic, the celebrity voices are just a novelty toy, not a serious listening tool.
Audio Quality Comparison: Speechify vs. ElevenLabs
This is where the high price tag becomes hard to justify.
When you strip away the celebrity marketing, Speechify sounds like a GPS navigation system from 2015.
It lacks the subtle details that make a voice sound human. There are no natural breaths, no dramatic pauses, and the intonation is flat. It reads every sentence with the exact same robotic cadence.

My Verdict
The difference is colossal.
- Speechify feels like “IVONA” or old-school text-to-speech. It is functional, but tiring to listen to for long periods.
- ElevenLabs feels like a Netflix documentary narration. It is immersive.
If you are going to listen to a book for 10 hours, you need a voice that doesn’t exhaust your brain. Speechify fails this test.
The Pricing: Actually Good Value?
I have to give Speechify credit here. Unlike many AI tools that charge you per word or per character, Speechify Premium offers unlimited listening.
A crucial part of any Speechify review is analyzing the cost versus value.
- Cost: You can grab the annual plan (approx. $139/year) or find a monthly option (usually around $29/mo).
- The Benefit: Zero anxiety. You can listen to 100 PDFs, 5 books, and your emails, and you will never run out of credits.
My Verdict on Price: If you are a student or a researcher who needs to consume massive amounts of text regardless of the audio quality, the price is absolutely fair. It is a workhorse tool.

- Why: AI is great, but for fiction and storytelling, nothing beats a professional human actor.
- Cost: A credit system (1 book per month). It’s more expensive per book, but the experience is premium.
Final Speechify Review Verdict: Pass or Buy?
- Buy Speechify IF: You need to process huge volumes of text for school or work and you don’t mind a slightly robotic tone. The unlimited usage is the key selling point here.
- Choose ElevenLabs IF: You want the best possible audio quality. If you want to listen to articles or shorter books and actually enjoy the voice, ElevenLabs wins on realism.
